August Bank Holiday Sloe Picking 2012

Post by Ricco » 27 Aug 2012, 11:17

Hi All

I picked my Sloes yerterday &I just sieved throught them making sure any bad or green ones were taken out of the tub. Not sure how much weight I have here yet but I can say the ones I took out accounted for about 15% of the total we picked, which were a mix of over ripe, bad, burst & slightly green.

Here are some pics for you all...

They don't look ripe, and they shouldnt be this early, especially with the weather we have had.

This morning I realised they were not 'Sloes' !!!

So glad that 'Wild plum gin' is as good. LOL.

The fruit in your photos are definitely sloes.

look like sloes to me as well I'm afraid.

They don't look too under ripe, so you might just get away with it....but defo a couple of months too early for me.

Well there are no thorns on the bushes so what would that mean?

Yeah they maybe a little ripe as I see the same bush this week are a little more bluer or turning darker but hopefully they will be ok.

Did wonder if I should turn them into a fruit gin mix and add the last of the blackberries I see in the bushes now... hmm your thoughts?

Cheers

The sloes in the photos look like the ones I found this morning, when checking out how things are growing this year. Last year I waited til end-September to even look for sloes and lots of the bushes were weighed down with lots of over-ripe fruit by that point, so I thought it would be worth a look this weekend. However, this year simply hasn't been a good one for growing many fruits and there were very few berries at all, and what was there was still hard and green-tinged. Even the small amount of green-ness means that they are under-ripe and I'd not risk wasting the gin, I'm afraid. :(

Can someone show me a picture of the under ripe sloes that they see right now?

I am looking at bushes and still see so many sloes that have gone over ripe!!

Question is are they not sloes I am monitoring and picking?

The bottles I have already 'DONE' have been turned and twisted.

The clear bottle is as a purple bluey (sloe) colour as the light red coloured bottles are!!

TIA

Hi all.

Looking at the berries that are still on the bushes now I see they are softer and darker with no green colour at all.

So the question is what to do with the batch I made already?

I would guess that a simple replacement of berries would be still ok?
or
Maybe another berry or fruit I could change it to like blackberries?

I will make another batch of sloe gin anyway from the sloes I will pick soon.

Cheers in advance
