where are the special offers on gin?

Post by bugbear » 26 Jan 2011, 14:40

For my started in October Sloe Gin I used Morrison's own brand (not "Value"), in 1.5L bottles, bought for just under 15 quid a bottle on special offer (IIRC).

Now that I've decanted (syphon'd) from the Demojohn, I'm ready to start a new batch with the sloes I froze back in October.

But the gin isn't on offer any more, and I've been checking the price for weeks.

Can anyone point out a well priced gin? I don't want to go for "value" ranges, on the grounds that all this time and effort deserves decent(ish) ingredients.

I used my Tesco 10% off voucher (over £30 spend) they sent me with the points vouchers a while back...you also get the points on top which would apply to all brands. I brought the Tesco Gin which at the time was one of the cheapest on offer.

I'll start the ball rolling. All these are "own brand" Gins, not "premium", and not "saver/value"

In Diss, today:

Tesco:

1L - 14.50
1.5L - 21.00

Morrisons:

1L - 14.49

Co-op:

70Cl - 11.15
1L - 17.29

Tesco cheapest at 14.00 per L, on their 1.5L bottle

Anyone got prices for Sainsbury, Waitrose, Asda, Aldi, Lidl?

Not prices, but isn't Aldi's own brand gin meant to be award winning?
No Aldi nearby so used holiday duty-free and Tesco's London gin. Have used the Tesco value gin before but it definitely 'tastes' thru the sloe gin.

It's what I ended up using;

Same price as most of the "normal" supermarket own brands, but better reviews. I bought 10 x 70cl
bottles (they don't do larger bottles) which got me a funny look on the checkout.

Morrison Own: 70cl, £10.49, 1L £14.89
Tesco Own: 70cl £11.50, 1L £15.50, but Gordons (on offer) £15.00 for 1L

In 2014 my best deal was good old Aldi Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin at about £9.99 for 70cl. The Tesco basics was cheap but not as tasty and the Christmas deals of brands like Gordons or Greenalls at £15/litre were not bad but still more expensive than Aldi with no great benefit.

Here we go;

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle ... l-waitrose

taste test results (with prices...)

Gin taste test results: the top 10

Score in brackets, price per 70cl bottle

1. Morrisons London Dry Gin (80%) £10.49
2. Lidl Castelgy London Dry Gin (78%) £9.99
3. Waitrose London Dry Gin (78%) £12
4. Greenall’s London Dry Gin (77%) £15
5. Beefeater Dry Gin (76%) £16
6. Asda London Dry Gin (75%) £11
7. Sainsbury’s London Dry Gin (74%) £11.50
8. Aldi Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin (74%) £9.99
9. Gordon’s Special Dry London Gin (74%) £16
10. The Cooperative London Dry Gin (73%) £11.99

Since I have an Aldi in town (now), I'll probably be going with Aldi; whilst it's ranked 8th, the scoring is actually VERY close.
