Violets

Post by Moonich » 25 Nov 2011, 21:16

I've been on the scrounge for nice bottles and a mate gave me an unopened Liqueur de Violette from a company Benoit Serres. It's the most fabulous colour but that doesn't come through in the picture and is 25%.Image

I was going to make a start on it this weekend so I could use the empty for my sloe gin, but I nearly had a heart attack when googled it; £40-£50 a bottle!!!

Is it so expensive because it's difficult to make? Does anyone know how it's made and what the base spirit is?

I'm putting it away now instead of frittering it away in front of Strictly. It's going to a technicoloured Christmas this year in our house.

It's so expensive because it uses genuine violet oil, it's a neutral base spirit with a smaller proportion of Armagnac added to it. It's very regional in France quite rare and not widely exported, hence the price.

Thanks for that Somnopore. I think I'll use half the contents and make a couple of small bottles up to give as presents - especially as it sounds more special than my not even close to being ready sloe gin which I had down for sticking fillers.

Yeah that's a nice idea, I give last years sloe gin for this years presents to make it worth having.

I've not seen that stuff outside of France much at all, I have a 2/3 bottle left in my "collection"
which only comes out at Xmas or randomly. Lol

This is my first year of this so if it turns out I don't like sloe gin, I can dump, I mean, gift it next year. I've book marked a few other drinkies to try and make next year.

Blackberry vodka can be very nice and Elderflower champagne is very special.
