Re: Will 2008 be a bad year for the blackthorn?

My parents have a farm and this is the first year in 45 that they haven't been able to harvest the hay. The reason? no sunshine! we have only had about ten days of pure sunshine in Cheshire this summer. You need four consecutive ones to make hay. They have about 150yds of Blackthorn bushes and usual...

Grubs!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've just started picking this years damsons and there are very few on the trees and half of them are full of little grubs who seem to have laid their eggs in them. The fruit on some nearby trees isn't fully ripe yet and as yet, hasn't fallen foul of the grubs. Should I pick the harder ones now to a...

Re: I think my Damson Gin may be too sweet

It's still too sweet. I think I'm going to do a test on a pint and see if it makes a difference.

Hiya, The cloudiness has been evident in every bottle of gin I've made. As you've said, it's the fruit itself. I guess as it's been softened in the freezer and also squashed between boards, there might be more than usual. Not a problem though, just might need a bit more clearing than usual. Not sur...

Stange floaty bits in my gin

I've just made some sloe gin. I froze them then thawed them out. To burst them further I pressed the sloes between two glass chopping boards. This has worked fine but there is now a cloudy floating section above the sloes in the jar. There was also some green growth on some of the berries from the t...

Are all sloes the same size?

Last year i made some sloe gin and it tastes great. I've looked on here at pictures of sloes and they seem bigger than the ones I used, they are about 1/2 inch in diameter.

The bushes are definitely the Blacktorn type (loads of spikes etc).

Am I using the right ones?

I think my Damson Gin may be too sweet

I've just made Damson Gin for the second year. I have used a recipe of 3lbs damsons, 2lbs sugar and 1500ml gin. I put in Le Parfait jars over a month ago. I tested it last night and it tastes much sweeter than last years (I prefer it less syrupy). Does the sweetness reduce over the next couple of mo...
