Re: Sloe Brandy

I've just tried to bottle my first attempt at sloe brandy. Failed...........by the time the wife and I had finished 'sampling' there wasn't enough left worth bottling! Absolutely lipsmackingly brill. I used the same recipe as for sloe gin: 400g sloes, 110g sugar, 75cl cheap Asda smartprice brandy. T...

Re: Waiting for frost – and an almond.

I suppose it's a matter of personal taste. But I must admit I prefer to keep it simple - no additives, only three ingredients; fruit, spirit and sugar - easy !

Re: Frozen sloes - one year old!

Hi, Galloway Gal. Definitely NOT a step too far. I froze 1.6 kg of sloes, washed and destalked, in November 2007. Having got over the initial panic and anxiety attack brought on by the lack of sloes this year, I defrosted them slowly in warm water (you know, the way you do when you're melting chocol...

Re: 15 month old gin with sloes still in situ - is it safe ?

Hi Bumble. If I were you I'd have a sip at the stuff and, if it tastes ok, decant it. I can't actually see it being unsafe to drink or even unsafe to use the sodden fruit. As long as you know the origins of it and it's history ie, that it hasn't been tampered with,it should be ok. As for the taste.....

Whisky with last years' Sloes

Was it a good management?....Was it intuition?.... Was it pure luck?.... Goodness know what made me pick more Sloes, last year, than I needed.........but boy, am I glad I did ! On our final trek in November 2007, we picked 1.6kilos of beautiful sloes that ended up washed, dried stalked and bagged and...

Re: Damson Vodka

Hi Ann Yes - or, at least the way I make Damson Vodka - the method and ratios are the same as Sloe Gin. I use the same recipe for Sloe Gin/Whisky/Vodka/Brandy and Damson Gin/Whisky/Vodka/Brandy and enjoy all equally. :D The only fruit I use a different recipe for is Blackberry. It has more natural s...

White rum and Blackberry

Hello folks. This is my first time on the site - a quick reply to graham.p re blackberries in white rum. I made it last year as a way of using up the fruit left over from my wife's jam making. Can't say I was thrilled but the wife downed the lot - 2 litres in 2 months - said it was gorgeous though a...
