Traffic fumes.

My friend has sloes growing at the back of his garden which happens to be near a main road.

Will the traffic fumes affect the the sloes? Would they be safe to use?

Good luck with the sloe future!

Christmas recipe – what a long 2003 season!

Thankgoodness for your site! Last year, sometime in October, I was driving through a Cotswold village and came across a line of roadside trees dripping wiith sloes (a sight I hadn't seen since my childhood growing up in rural Cornwall.) As I was dashing to get somewhere on time, I took a mental note...

Can sloes also be used as a pudding?

I have been making sloe damson & bullace gin for a number of years now and each year wonder if the fruit can be used for an other use (a pudding)?

Agitation – how much should we shake the bottles?

Very interesting information on your web-site. Well done. Having produced sloe gin for many years, my normal recipe and production process involves a year or two in the bottle / jar. As I have picked about 40kg this year, I was hoping to go into small-scale production for my local Suffolk farm shop....

White sugar – or brown? - and other tips

I first made Sloe gin in 1976 (a very hot summer!) on the Isle of Wight. The method that was recommended to me was: 1- Pick the Sloes when ripe - nothing said about frost. 2- 2/3 fill a glass sweet jar - from an old confectioner's shop. 3- Fill remaining space with cubed sugar - to allow a slow sloe...

Pour rough dry sherry over the discarded sloes

during a debate on Sloe Gin it was suggested to add a few drops of almond essence ? interesting It was also suggested that after the fruit and gin are separated take a rough dry sherry and add the fruit for a few weeks, supposed to be good result. Sloes are not ‘completely useless’! Good for puree, jam etc

Great site! a) Sloes are not completely useless for anything else. You can make a puree and then make jam, jelly, ice cream etc. The sloes left over after making sloe gin make a great boozy desert jelly with a little gelatine. b)Freezing the sloes before pouring on the gin gives a better extraction,...

Commercial sloe gin in shops

Our branch of Morrison's in Lincoln, UK sells a commercial brand of sloe gin which I've never tried. Next time I'm in there I'll get some details. Just collected my sloes for this year - at the top of the hill they were small and shrivelled but further down they were plump and juicy - more water at ...

Some good sloe gin tips

As you have unerringly pointed out, this has been a bumper season. I am a keen dog walker and without any effort at all, have picked more than 3 kilos of sloes this year, just filling my pockets as I walk past the blackthorn bushes on the downs near my home. I have used about 4 litres of gin so far....

Sloe Gin Chocolates

My mum places the stoned berries (hence she recommends slitting the berries for the gin rather than pricking) on a shallow-sided tray, spaces them out a bit, then simply pours on a melted bar or two of plain chocolate. Leave to cool and harden ... and enjoy. I think the point about using the spent b...
