Cloudy sloe gin

Hi I made a lot of sloe gin about two weeks ago. I froze the sloes for the first time this year - I usually pick them, prick them and use them fresh. I have noticed today that my batch all seems to some degree cloudy with a lot of sediment - one lot even has a floating grub in it! Some of the sloes ...

Sloe bushes

I was delighted to discover a field packed with sloe bushes whilst out walking with my dogs some months back. Making a mental note of where they were I have been back today (mid august) to check on progress of growing sloes. Unfortunately I found that there wasn't a single sloe in sight - and they a...

I'm new to sloe gin making having made my first batch last Nov - just had a taste and its pretty good if I say so myself! thanks to all those on the forum who gave me tips at the start. I have heard you can re-use the sloes when you remove them from the gin after 6 months to make sloe cider or sherr...

Re: Help I'm new to sloe gin making

Thats ok then, thanks for your tips again. I am shaking the mixture each day to try to get the sugar to dissolve and its getting better I think - its almost a week old now - hope am not shaking it too vigourously - is it possible to do this? Am just bit paranoid about bruising the sloes and the whol...

Re: Help I'm new to sloe gin making

Thants a bit more promising news than my friend the doom and gloom merchant! I can't seem to get the sugar settled at the bottom of the demi john to mix when I shake the mixture. Would it be ok to put a long skewer in there to try to break it up or would that introduce bacteria in there?

Re: Help I'm new to sloe gin making

Thanks for your tips, I now have another dilemma!! A friend of mine has today told me that she went sloe hunting the other day after the first decent frost - as I did-however she thought most of the sloes around here are a bit on the wrinkly side and that they are no good like this as they will send...

Help I'm new to sloe gin making

I've just had my first attempt at making sloe gin in a demi john - well cleaned and sterilized - given to me by a friend. I haven't filled it to the top due to the sheer size of it and the amount of gin that would be needed to do so - its about 2/3 full. Will this be ok? Also i've got a small airloc...
