Yes. I had the same problem a couple of years ago. I found a good solution is to take the sloes (or damsons) out of the freezer, let them thaw a while but not to the point of getting mushy. When you say rum I presume you mean white rum, ie Bacardi? Yes I've made Damson and Sloe Bacardi following the same method for both using a demi john.
