Re: Will 2008 be a bad year for the blackthorn?

The news is grim in Kent too. I have several good sites that usually ensure plenty of sloes but very little this year and over half the bushes with no sloes on at all. The berries that I did find were so tiny they were almost blackcurrant size, with a few pea sized thrown in. Ive managed to scrape e...

Re: Recipe for Sloe Gin Truffles

I use a cherry stoner. Perfect for the job!

If you dont have one, Id say to just make a slit with a knife and hook them out that way. Itll be quite messy but you'll be mushing them up to make the truffles anyway so it wont really matter.

Hi Leo I didnt freeze the berries - it didnt occur to me actually! I just followed the recipie as posted here and published by Waitrose; a large chain of supermarket here in the UK. It was enough to put me off rowanberries for a very long time, if not for good! On a brighter note, my recent elderflo...

Thought I'd add my experiences with rowanberries to this thread. Id finally found some growing that were not in someone's garden around where I live and made a relish. (after waiting patiently for them to ripen) Id never tasted rowanberries so didnt know what to expect. I do an awful lot of experime...

Hi there If youre using predominantly hard, wrinkled sloes, it means that they had gone over and you picked too late. The size of ripe sloes vary from year to year ranging from marble size to a large grape and should have the feel and texture of a firm grape. Im not sure how you could rescue what yo...

Gorse Flowers

I have searched the net but cannot find any other mention or recipe. Does anyone know anything about gorse pickle, or have a pickle/chutney recipe that co...

Hey Srebrana Had the sloes been soaked in the gin first? I only use sloes that have been removed from the gin just as you are bottling it up - so you have a good soak for several months. After you remove them from the gin and take out the stones, add a bit of the sloe gin and pulp them with a pestle...

Hey there - nice user name ;) I mean the ones you remove after they've been soaked in gin :) Somewhere on here I also posted a chutney recipie using sloes which is delicious and can use either 'raw' or 'soaked' sloes. I made mine with raw as some people who couldnt have the alcohol could still try i...

Im glad you tried the chutney!

I didnt like the idea of stones in either, youll see i recomended a cherry stoner to take the stones out before making the chutney... :)

You might be onto a good thing there Elizabeth. Perhaps pop the left over sloes from the gin into a blender and make the raspberry ripple effect that way...
