Re: Very little around this year

Further research and foraging has revealed that whilst some normally generous bushes are extremely thin this year, some aren't.

By asking around, I have been pointed at some usable sloes.

Not a good year, then, but not the complete wash out that 2012 was.

Re: Very little around this year

Agreed. :(

I checked one of my locations - 10 bushes, about a dozen sloes. At first I thought someone had beaten me to it, but the berries were just as sparse at 8 foot and above.

(a picked bushed often has berries at heights were people can't reach)

Sloes - super early this year

Went for a check; bushes laden with sloes, many with a beautiful purple bloom, but some ALREADY black.

People have already started picking quite heavily, in the more accessible areas...

Re: How much sloe gin do you make?

Agreed - my productions rate is designed to out strip consumption, so that
a tasty backlog builds up.

This plan did not go well in Autummn 2012 when there were NO sloes.

My normal batch is 7.5 Litres of gin.

Re: A quick way to prick sloes

I invented a method for pricking sloes which will keep them intact but is much quicker than using a single needle. Re: where are the special offers on gin?

Not prices, but isn't Aldi's own brand gin meant to be award winning? No Aldi nearby so used holiday duty-free and Tesco's London gin. Have used the Tesco value gin before but it definitely 'tastes' thru the sloe gin. It's what I ended up using; http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/10013191/At-t...

Re: Are the Sloes a bit scarce this year everywhere?

I'm in Essex and there are plenty both in Harold Wood and at Billericay Cricket Club, but they are higher up than in previous years. You need to be tall or take some steps to reach them! I take an old walking stick, and hook them down. The crop in my area is "OK", but not great. Compared to last ye...

Re: (over)pricking sloes?

Returning to a very old thread with extra information; I remembered to look at the clock this time.

I just pricked the sloes for 2 demijohn batches of gin (2.5L of gin per demijohn)

2900 g of sloes, pricked in 45 minutes.

Re: Not looking like a good harvest this year

Did a preliminary check on a local source - perimeter of 4 fields, probably 80 acres in all (area).

Nothing.

All the plants seem healthy enough, lots of hips, blackberries not too bad, but blackthorns are simply empty.

No sloe gin making for me this year.

:(

Re: Filtering - impossible?!

It sounds like clogging varies with the fruit, and that if you have a large amount of sludge, a graded sequence of separating stages, starting with (multiple) decanting, and ending with coffee filters via various intermediates is the answer. Thanks to all, both in this thread, and the older ones I'v...

Filtering - impossible?!

At the weekend I syphoned the clear layer of sloe gin from my 3 production demijohns into a couple of "working" demijohns, and tipped the bottom layers into a 3rd demijohn. Having left this for a few days, I syphoned all the clear stuff (the huge majority of the first 2, and some of the third) into ...
