Re: Oh No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least with the flail the hedgerow will grow back. I found a nice row of blackthorn last year just south of Warwick on the way to Welsbourne (Kay you may know it). But because the EC have cancelled setaside payments to farmers the land owner has pulled out all of the hedges so he can plough the ex...

Re: Oh No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jamesb, You can prolong the life of your used sloes by topping up with cider or sherry. I believe its even possible to do both, cider first and follow on with sherry. I made a batch of cider (Slider) last year but the sloes were too mushy after this to go onto make the sherry (Slerry?). If you ha...

In eager anticipation

Well I couldn't put it off any longer and on Boxing day I sampled the first batches of sloe gin I have ever made. I'm delighed to say they are excellent. One bottle light and slightly sour, the other dark and with a distinct almond smell (hows this it didn't use almond essence). Thanks to sloe.biz a...

Re: Instant sloe gin

Good, I'm pleased it worked out. I'll certainly give it a go next season.

Re: Instant sloe gin

Thanks for the offer of defrosted sloes anyway, guess our postie may have been a little concerned delivering a brown package with "claret" seeping through the wrapping. There are a lot of Polish Skleps (excuse possible wrong spelling) around these days, guessing you could also try at one of th...

Re: Instant sloe gin

Thanks Shrew, I think you may be right!
But if you do have a go please come back to the forum with the result of the "trial".
I would have a go myself but sloes are in very short supply around here: combination of over zealous pickers and the
dreaded flail.

Instant sloe gin

Well not "instant" but very quick.
Some members of this forum may find this article of interest and even give it a go in there are still sloes
available to pick.

Re: Sloe Sherrry

Hello Spam, your cider idea seems interesting. I'm a cider drinker myself and Westons Old Rosie is my fave tipple.
But I think I'll save the Rosie and try some of the cheaper brands. How long do you leave the cider on the old
sloes before decanting/using the slider?

Re: Raw material identifcation

Thanks again Kay. No chance to get out picking this Sunday but I may have a chance later in the week. Decided to
try one bottle of Sloe vodka as an experiment, although I do prefer the taste of gin. But you've got to try haven't you!
Regards, Mick

Re: Raw material identifcation

Thanks Kay. From your info I'm sure they must be sloes. Its the pale flesh and jucie that through me. My first batch, picked off the M40 at Barford were very dark and coloured the gin instantly. Those picked this weekend near Nuneaton much less so, hence my concern. So I'll probably be back out pick...

Raw material identifcation

Hi, this is my first attempt at making sloe gin and I have a question concerning the appearance of the fruits. The first fruits I collected had a very deep red flesh and juice but this weekend I picked what I thought were sloes but the flesh and juice was pale in colour. The skin is very bitter to t...
