Re: Are the Sloes a bit scarce this year everywhere?

They are not abundent in Kent - 2011 was an amazing year, last year there was a dearth, it was really hard to find any at all. This year there are some, but not thousands.

Re: Blackthorn blossom

Lots and lots of lovely future sloes blossoming in my parents' field in mid-Kent - the blossom is very late this year, but it's looking hopeful that this harvest will make up for a dismal one last year.

Re: Not looking like a good harvest this year

Seems fairly universal, then.

I usually have access to loads of them, on my parents' fields - we're the only ones who pick them. I hope we'll get a few, but it's definitely completely different from last year.

Not looking like a good harvest this year

I was at my parents' house for the Jubilee weekend, and the prospects aren't looking good for the autumn. There are very few sloes growing at all. Perhaps late frosts killed off the blossom?

This is in Kent, by the way.

Re: Filtering - impossible?!

When I drain mine, I don't syphon any. I put it through a colander first, to get the big berries and chunks out. Then through a sieve. Then through a jelly bag lined with an extra cheesecloth, and it's clear, then.

Re: 41.2% gin @ Sainsburys and 40% @ Tesco

This is a theory my mother and have come up with - we've been testing it scientifically this year, with bottles labelled and separate. Then we are going to do blind-testing on fortunate friends and relatives, and I'll let you know!

41.2% gin @ Sainsburys and 40% @ Tesco

I prefer to use stronger gin - not 37% stuff - and it's often more expensive. Sainsbury's has a special offer at the moment, with 70cl of 41.2% gin costing £13.30 instead of £16.70 per 70cl.

Tescos has Beefeater 40% gin on offer @ 2 x 70cl bottles for £22.

Re: Gin offers 2010

Grennall's gin still on offer at Sainsburys for £12.70-ish a litre. Pretty good for 40%. Sainsbury's basic gin is 37.5%, and is £7.89 per 70cl bottle, so £11.27 a litre. Ocado does London Dry Gin Waitrose 1.5L for £19.29, which is £12.86 a litre. Not on special, but a pretty OK price for 37.5% gin. ...

Re: freezing sloes to make them split

As jarrick has explained the construction of the wire brush I will just answer his question. The wire is usually a high carbon steel to make it stiff. If left for a number of hours the strands will indeed go black due to the acid in the berry juice, but that is the point of my reference to washing ...

Re: Asda jars are rubbish

My mother bought 6 x 3litre jars last year from ebay, they are perfectly water-tight (and, more importantly, gin-tight). Cost her just under £20.

Re: freezing sloes to make them split

I've found a sloe tree that has massive 17mm diameter sloes, small stones, and at this time of year, you can eat them raw without them hardly drying out your mouth at all - and they're damn tasty. I'll be taking a load of cuttings from that one and planting a few in my garden. probably a bullace or...
